Something old

Two years ago I wrote about why AI developers had adopted diamond stars or sparkles as the iconography of AI. Since I wrote my blog post on sparkles and AI, Google published a Google Design piece about its use of the sparkle across its AI technologies and nearly 100 icons indicating AI in play.

While the use of sparkles has waned since my initial post, the imagery of AI as magic is alive and well. As people become more familiar with the functionality and capabilities of AI the magicalness of these tools will fade. Why not journey back to the near past and take a look at sparkles and AI anew?

No one can doubt AI’s commitment to sparkles
Sparkle iconography in AI conjures notions of whimsy and magic, but is it enough to break the killer robot genre?

The ChatGPT caricatures trend is already over but it remains a useful reminder of the amount of information we are giving over to AI tools. By simply uploading a photo or myself and asking for a caricature 'of me and my job' based on what the tool knows about me I was able to catch a glimpse at how probability plays out in AI image generation. What came back revealed some truths and some exagerations, but more importantly it reinforced why analytical thinking, human judgement and a healthy amount of skepticism should be brought to all AI outputs.
